Why this lesson
We eat food every day. Food is not only for living. Food makes us happy. Food helps us think of our family and our home.
MY NOTE — personal reminders and in-the-moment cuesThis is the A2–B1 edition. Sentences are short and the grammar is simple. It’s anticipated that students need more time and more examples here, so model every task yourself first, then let them copy the pattern.
1Warm-up: look at the survey5 minTTT low
Give out the survey. Students read the short sentences and tick agree, not sure, or disagree. No talking yet. This shows them the topic and the new words.
MY NOTE — personal reminders and in-the-moment cuesIt’s likely a few words are new. Say: ‘Don’t worry, we learn them next.’

3Watch / listen7 minTTT low
A short clip of a market with lots of food, or a family eating together. Play it two times. After, students say ONE word they saw.
No video? Read this aloud
Read aloud, slowly: “This is my family. We eat dinner together. My mother cooks rice and meat. The food is good. We are happy.”
4Talk with a partner10 minTTT low
Pairs ask and answer the questions. The frames below help them make full sentences.
- What is your favourite food?
- What do you eat in the morning?
- Can you cook? What can you cook?
- Do you like fruit? Which fruit?
MY NOTE — personal reminders and in-the-moment cuesIt’s anticipated that some pairs finish fast. Ask them: ‘Why?’ to get one more sentence.

Anticipated focus: like + noun and like + -ing (I like rice. I like cooking.). It’s likely students will say ‘I like cook’ — a quick board fix helps.
Write 2–3 student sentences on the board (no names). Fix them together, slowly.
6Different people say different things9 minTTT low
The question: Is home food better than restaurant food?
Give each student one card. They read it and say that person’s idea in their own words.
A MOTHERHome food is good and cheap. I cook for my family.
A STUDENTI like restaurants. The food is fast and fun.
A COOKI make new food in my restaurant. I love my job.
A FARMERI grow good food. Fresh food is the best.
7Agree or disagree?8 minTTT low
Read each sentence. Students stand on one side for AGREE, the other for DISAGREE, the middle for NOT SURE. Then one student says why.
Home food is better than restaurant food.
Fast food is bad for us.
Everyone can learn to cook.
Breakfast is the most important meal.
The food in my country is very good.

Anticipated focus: there is / there are (There is rice. There are vegetables.). Students will probably forget the plural ‘are’.
9Your turn (choose one)5 minTTT low
Choose ONE. Use short sentences.
- Write 4 foods you like.
- Draw your favourite meal and write its name.
- Make a small menu for a café: 3 foods and 2 drinks.
MY NOTE — personal reminders and in-the-moment cuesFor the 55-minute trim: give this as homework and end after ‘Agree or disagree?’
10One word to finish2 minTTT low
Go around the class: Say one food you like. Just one word each.
