Why this lesson
Many people love football. When their team wins, they are very happy. Football brings people together.

1Warm-up: look at the survey5 minTTT low
Give out the survey. Students read the short sentences and tick agree, not sure, or disagree. No talking yet. This shows them the topic and the new words.

Read aloud, slowly: “The team plays. A player kicks the ball. Goal! The fans are very happy. They sing together.”

Pairs ask and answer the questions. The frames below help them make full sentences.
- Do you like football?
- What is your favourite team?
- Do you play a sport? Which sport?
- How do you feel when your team wins?

Anticipated focus: present simple (I play. He plays. They win.). It’s likely students will drop the ‘s’ (he play → he plays).
Write 2–3 student sentences on the board (no names). Fix them together, slowly.

The question: Is winning important?
Give each student one card. They read it and say that person’s idea in their own words.

Read each sentence. Students stand on one side for AGREE, the other for DISAGREE, the middle for NOT SURE. Then one student says why.
Football is fun.
Winning is the most important thing.
Football brings people together.
Top players have too much money.
It is okay to be sad when your team loses.
